VERVET MONKEY FOUNDATION
Tzaneen, South Africa
Would you like to experience living in the African bush and rehabilitating the indigenous vervet monkey? The Vervet Monkey Foundation operates the largest center for vervets in the world, caring for more than 500 monkeys.
If you volunteer here, you’ll learn from experts, help hand-rear orphans in baby season, and watch them grow with their foster mums. As a volunteer, you’ll help with feeding the monkeys and caring for them in our sick bay. If you have the right skills – everything from painting to welding – you can help build new enclosures or set up firebreaks. There’s always a need for administrative help. Longer-term volunteers may help integrate monkeys into social groups.
You’ll sleep in a wooden cabin and eat vegan meals. In the evening, you can spend quiet time getting to know the other volunteers. On your days off, you can explore nearby Kruger National Park, the Debengeni waterfalls, the Great Letaba River and beautiful tea gardens.
You don’t need previous experience, but you must have an interest in conservation. Be prepared to work hard under the brutal African sun. The reward: the thrill of caring for a threatened, intelligent African primate – the vervet monkey.
