SANAGA-YONG CHIMPANZEE RESCUE
Mbargue Forest, Cameroon
Located in Cameroon’s remote Mbargue Forest, Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue provides sanctuary for 72 chimpanzees in seven enclosures sprawling over 40 acres of natural habitat.
Sanaga-Yong actively seeks volunteers for six-month stays. Volunteers help with the day-to-day operations: working with the French-speaking Cameroonian staff, helping with feeding and caring for chimpanzees, washing fruit, cleaning cages, maintaining the fence and facilities, overseeing use of project equipment, painting, provisioning and other manual tasks.
Volunteers pitch in wherever most needed, though the center tries to match individuals with their talents and skills. While volunteers have daily contact with the chimpanzees at feeding time, hands-on contact with baby chimps is limited.
